About Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic is a healthcare profession focused on the diagnosis, management and prevention of conditions affecting the neuro-musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine, joints, muscles and nervous system. Chiropractors use a range of clinical approaches — manual therapy, spinal and extremity manipulation, mobilisation, exercise and rehabilitation — alongside advice on posture, movement and lifestyle.

A chiropractor should first assess your condition and determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate. Where necessary, you may be referred to another healthcare professional for further investigation or treatment. Chiropractic is healthcare — not simply “spinal adjustment.”

Chiropractic care is commonly used for

Back and neck pain Headaches associated with the neck Joint and musculoskeletal pain Neurological conditions of the spine and extremities Sports and activity-related injuries Stiffness and reduced mobility Problems affecting muscles, joints and spine

What to expect when you visit a chiropractor

Your first visit should involve much more than simply being “adjusted.”

Your health history

Your chiropractor will ask about your current problem, symptoms, previous injuries, medical history, medications, lifestyle and other relevant health information.

Clinical assessment

A physical and musculoskeletal assessment may include examination of your posture, movement, joints, muscles, neurological function and spine — and whether your symptoms could indicate a condition requiring medical investigation or referral.

Explanation of your findings

Your chiropractor should explain what they have found, discuss possible causes and explain whether chiropractic care is appropriate. You should have the opportunity to ask questions before treatment begins.

Your treatment plan

If chiropractic care is appropriate, the recommended approach is discussed with you. Treatment may include manual therapy, specific chiropractic adjustments, spinal manipulation or mobilisation, exercise and rehabilitation, and advice on movement, posture, lifestyle and nutrition.

Ongoing care

Your progress should be reviewed regularly. If your condition is not responding as expected, or further investigation is required, your chiropractor should consider referral to an appropriate healthcare professional.

You should never feel pressured into treatment. You have the right to understand your proposed treatment and give informed consent.

Internationally trained chiropractors

All registered chiropractors practising in Uganda completed their professional education outside Uganda — to date there is no formal chiropractic training in Uganda. International qualifications must meet the applicable requirements for recognition and registration, regulated by the Allied Health Professionals Council.

A person calling themselves a chiropractor is not necessarily a qualified or licensed chiropractor. Spinal manipulation can carry risks when performed by an inadequately trained person. Always check professional registration and current licence before receiving treatment.

Chiropractic & your healthcare team

Depending on your condition, your care may involve collaboration with medical doctors, physiotherapists, orthopaedic specialists, rehabilitation and exercise professionals, and other appropriate healthcare providers.

Good healthcare means knowing when to treat, when to monitor and when to refer.
